CONQUISTADOR DARK ROAST from Henry's House of Coffee

I was dragging when I got out of bed. I've had the sniffles off and on for the last few weeks and my head felt stuffy.

Shuffled into the kitchen and poured myself a spoonful of Robitussin.

Methodically, made a pot of coffee and waited for it to brew.

Groggily, reached up and grabbed one of my favorite mugs.

Poured myself a cup with one packet of raw sugar and a tiny splash of 2 percent milk.

Sat down to check my emails.

Reached over to my cup. Took and sip. Took another sip.

Turned my attention away from my computer and back to my cup.

Whoa. This is good coffee. Strong coffee. Coffee that sneaks up on you and kick starts your engine.

Magical flavor.

I won't be taking over any countries,l but I am ready to tackle the morning!

It's Complicated

I have a love/hate relationship with the coffee machine in my office. I love the fact that the firm thinks enough of us to offer freshly brewed Starbucks coffee at several stations throughout the office.

When I first arrived and saw these beautiful babies, I was impressed, to say the least. My first thought, "Wow, this is class." I mean usually the office has an automatic coffee maker or a Keurig or even a Flavia.

But, to have a great big "Cadillac" of brewers that brews - get this - one cup at a time. You can have full strength caffeinated, or half-caf, or decaf. Pretty cool, huh?

And then you can set it for short or tall or grande size cups. You can hear the beans grinding as you're preparing your cup.

It takes about a minute or so - maybe a little longer to get your "perfect" cup.

You can even smell the aroma! Ahhhhh. If you've got to work, this is the place, right?

So. . .how come every time I've used this machine there's sediment at the bottom of my cup?

Which leads me to the moral of the story - bigger isn't always better.

There used to be a commercial with a character fish by the name of "Charlie the Tuna." He always tried to show his good taste in art and other things, and the anchor would fall to the bottom of the sea and miss him. The first coffee I sampled was the "Bin 16" from their Special Selection. Here's how I describe it:

"Very complex for being so mellow. Lots of different flavors. Full bodied, not burnt."

Lighten Up. Hello, Blondie!

If you've visited a Starbucks store this week, you've probably noticed something new. Starbucks has rolled out its lighter roast coffee for those who prefer something lighter.

I bought a tall cup the past two mornings this week (there's a Starbucks in the bottom of my building) and it's pretty nice.

As you know, I'm a dark-roast kind of drinker, but I must say, I'm very pleased with the flavor of the Blonde Roast. It reminds me of the old "Light Note" that Starbucks used to offer. And it's sort of nice to change it up.

There will be taste testings through Saturday in Starbucks stores, so if you haven't met the newest "Siren," check her out. You'll also notice that the coffees are now arranged according to roast (i.e. Blonde, Medium and Dark Roast).

You can't say that Starbucks isn't listening. And I'm learning to switch up my coffee drinking game.

Change is good.

The Queen of King Cakes - Sucre's King Cake Is Back!

Yeah, Baby!

I've heard all the raves about Sucre Bakery in New Orleans for years. And while they turn out all sorts of delicious baked goods, next to the macaroons, they may be most noted for their "King Cake."

If you don't know the story behind the "King Cake," you must "google" it. There are too many variations on the theme for me to expound here.

However, I have had at least two different varieties of King Cake from different bakeries in Louisiana. Sucre's is one-of-a-kind.

I would even dare to call it a contemporary take on King Cake. Everything from its beautiful finish (if I may use that word to describe it) to the moist texture inside puts it in a category all alone.

I especially love that it's not too sweet, extremely moist, and doesn't make a mess when I eat it. The cake I sampled had no filling and it didn't need it!

Coffee On A Stick With Zoku Quick Pop Maker

Cake Pops move over. Here come gourmet popsicles in minutes!

Zoku Quick Pop Maker is all the rage. You can create gourmet popsicles that would make the Good Humor Man blush. You can even make what I made - coffee pops!!

While the Zoku Quick Pop Maker is a lot of fun - it's not a toy. You have to really read the instructions first.

It's not rocket science but it is for serious pop seekers. You will want to make sure that you have all the components in one place before you start. Oh, and make sure you carefully read the recipe in the Zoku Quick Pops book before you compile your ingredients.

After I went out and bought a bag of Starbucks espresso roast for the sole intent of making these pops, I realized the recipe says "espresso powder." Duh.

Luckily I had a pack of Starbucks Via on hand and so I substituted the Columbian Via for espresso powder. It actually worked very well.

Here's what you'll need to make "Coffee Buzz" Pops:

1 1/3 cup of 2 percent milk

1/4 cup sugar

2 tbsp instant espresso powder

1/3 cup heavy cream

The pops are super yummy, however, I have a feeling that I'm going to be on high speed for a while today!

Are you an "In-E" or an "Out-E?"

There's a disturbing trend that has evolved amongst tea-drinkers.

Perhaps, it was always this way and I just hadn't noticed.

But, lately I've not only been mystified but somewhat bothered by the fact that I see more and more people who leave their tea bags inside the cup until they have finished drinking their tea!!

Now, most tea bag directions say "steep for 2 to 3 minutes, for best results," or something along that line.

So, what is up with people who don't take out their tea bags? Are they showing off their beverage of choice? Is this perhaps a regional or cultural thing?

I have said time and again. I don't pretend to be an expert on coffee or tea. I'm just a person who LOVES coffee and sometimes enjoys a cup of hot tea.

Can someone please tell me what's behind the bag movement? Enlighten me.

And, please, for the sake of political correctness, if I've offended any tea lovers with this post, I mean no harm. I'm just trying to understand you better.

I can't believe it. Another great coffee roaster, this one right under my nose, and I hadn't heard about it. Until now.

Oh, well, better late than never, right?

The first coffee from Master Roaster Henry Kalebjian that I am reviewing is called "Gypsy Blend." I would call it "mildly intense." It's a deep roast but none of that "burnt" taste you sometimes find.

The perfect coffee for the first cup of 2012.

I don't think I can give this roast its just due. You need to check it out for yourself. Henry Kalebjian knows his beans!

Happy Last Day of the Coffee Drinking Year

Well, it's December 31st. The last day of the year. It's good to be in the land of the living and drinking coffee.

As I reflect back on the year, coffee-wise, I'm happy to say I've enjoyed some delicious old favorites and been pleasantly surprised by some amazing new coffees.

No, I'm not resolving to drink less coffee. Coffee is one of my greatest pleasures and I have no intention of cutting back. I do, however, plan to open my blog to include more coffees that are not necessarily considered "gourmet," but coffees that wake up a good portion of America and that I have not reviewed or talked about here before.

I'm still enjoying some wonderful holiday blends and "hoarded" a couple that should at least last for the first couple of months of 2012.

Here's to a great last day of 2011 and a healthy and safe New Year.

Imbibe responsibly, don't drink and drive and don't forget to have plenty of coffee on-hand.

Goes Great With Coffee (Or Even Without) - Chocolate Chocolate's Sea Salt Caramels

Everybody is mixing chocolate and caramel and sea salt it seems. Starbucks even has a salted caramel mocha.

I received this amazing box of chocolate treats over the weekend. Needless to say, after tonight, there are no more. I can't remember which member of this household got the last chocolate, but it wasn't me!!

These "Sea Salt Caramels" by Chocolate Chocolate are made from the finest chocolate (dark or milk) which covers a creamy caramel. The sea salt on top is truly what sets it apart from a regular chocolate caramel.

I would venture to say that the sea salt caramel might be the next big thing. Right up there with the peanut butter cup.

The Battle of the Blue Mountains Continues - Next Up, Jamaica Blue Mountain by Catahoula

This stuff is so good that Catahoula can't keep it on the shelves. Mainly because it's not something they carry year round. In fact, I pre-paid for mine just to make sure I didn't miss out.

This Blue Mountain, a pure coffee, is lightly roasted and extremely mild.

The first cup I reviewed, I brewed in my Capresso automatic coffee maker. It was good. But when I used the pour-over method with my Chemex and slightly more coffee, it was pure delight.

K-Cups With Street Cred

Now, Starbucks(R) is making "K-Cups"(R)!

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing better than a pot of freshly brewed coffee, but with the addition of Starbucks to the K-Cup(R) roster, you're going to have to put up a pretty decent argument for not buying a Keurig(R).

It's perfect for those times when you don't feel like firing up the coffeemaker, or you want to break the ice with new guests or change the subject with that second date that's going horribly wrong.

I sampled the French Roast and Breakfast Blend. There are even Tazo(R) Tea K-Cups! Yup. You heard right.

My personal favorite is the Starbucks French Roast but I've always been partial to the "parlez vous Francais."

So, quit stalling. Surf on over to the Keurig(R) page and finish your holiday shopping.

Holla at Your Girl! I Scored a "12th Day" Starbucks Mug!

The early bird doesn't always catch the worm.

I'm sure you all heard about the "12 Days of Christmas" promotion from Starbucks.

Well, the 12th day - was on the 12th of December - last Monday. And, the deal of the day was free drip coffee every day for the entire month of January when you purchased the "12 Days Mug."

I thought to myself, "I am not going to get caught up in this madness. Each store probably got one mug. I'm not getting up at 4 a.m. just to get a mug. I don't need another commuter mug." Blah, blah, blah.

Well, I walked into a Starbucks (location shall remain anonymous) on yesterday (Tuesday!) and what did I spy but one little mug sitting all by its lonesome.

So, for 19.95, I have a collectible and cute mug for the holidays and can look forward to 31 days of free java.

Can't touch this.

As Promised: Cafe Escapes (R) Chai Latte K-Cup Review

"I used the 8-count when I inserted the chai latte into the Keurig.

I smiled when the water commenced brewing because the “color” was perfect – just the way I like it. Creamy-caramel color.

I did not notice the aroma until I purposely put the cup closer to my noise – instantly I noticed the “cinnamon” and “chai” aromas which started my salivary glands.

Wow! The taste is amazing…just the right amount of sweetener…the cinnamon tasted really good. There is also a hint of “tanginess” but not bitter.

This is definitely a wonderful product. Can’t wait for the Second Cup."

You Can Call Me Ray, or You Can Call Me Jay, But You Doesn't Have to Call Me Johnson

How many people remember the character actor Bill Saluga? He was better known as Raymond J. Johnson. He did this schtick that was hilarious and drove people insane at the same time. And it was all about his name.

Now, how many people order coffee under their real name?

I know, personally, I often make up a name when ordering a fancy drink at a coffeehouse. I mean, it's just easier sometimes. It's noisy, the barista is busy and do they really care who I am anyway? So, instead of using my real name, I'll use a nickname or maybe I'll just say "Sue." It's not like I'm signing a contract, right? And who doesn't like to play pretend?

I started giving this more thought the other day when I went for coffee with a co-worker. Her name is Carol but she ordered her latte under "Coco." And I turned to her and said, "Did you say Coco??" And that's when I learned that I'm not the only one who plays the name game. She said Coco was the name her Dad called her.

So, me being me, I started thinking of doing this thing where every time I went to a different coffee shop (not one of my usual haunts, of course), I would order specialty coffee drinks under a different name. Maybe I'll be Zsa Zsa or Paris or Chloe or Diddy. I think it would be a kick.

I just hope I don't forget to pick my drink up at the bar when they call my name.

Malabar Gold - Thanks, Timber!

*Monsooned Malabar is a variety of dry processed coffee beans. The harvested and processed beans are exposed to the monsoon winds for a period of about three to four months, causing the beans to swell and lose the original acidity, resulting in a sweet and syrupy brew. The coffee is unique to the Malabar Coast of Karnataka and Kerala and has protected status under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act. The name Monsooned Malabar is derived from exposure to the monsoon winds of the Malabar coast.
The blend is heavy bodied, pungent and is considered to be dry with a musty, chocolatey aroma and notes of spice and nuts.

The origins of Monsooned Malabar date back to the times of the British Raj, when, during the months that the beans were transported by sea from India to Europe, the humidity and the sea winds combined to cause the coffee to ripen from the fresh green to a more aged pale yellow.

When transportation was modernised, the length of this journey was dramatically reduced and the beans were much better protected from the fierce elements. However, the Europeans noticed that the coffee beans now arriving in their ports lacked the depth and character of the coffee beans received in days gone by.

It was determined that in the past the coffee beans had been transformed by exposure to the sea air and monsoon winds and rain. An alternative process was implemented to replicate these conditions, so that these incredible coffee beans could be enjoyed once again.

Pike Place Special Reserve - Worth A Trip To Seattle

Who cares if it rains in Seattle a lot. Turns out it's the only place you can get Pike Place Special Reserve.

Last month, I told you about the neat gift my niece brought me back from a trip to Seattle. A "Special Reserve" that's so special, you can only find it at a couple of Starbucks locations in Seattle.

Well, after admiring the packaging in my curio for several weeks now, I finally cracked it open. Oh. My. God.

This is like no other Pike Place blend I've had.

It's a deep roast, bold and smoky. Sort of made me feel like 1930s film star when I was drinking it.

Anyway, maybe they're "Sleepless in Seattle"* because there's so much good coffee, you don't want to sleep!

If anybody knows where I can find this stuff without traveling, please let me know. Amazing.

So Santa Won't Lose the Keys to the Sleigh

As I've said before, I have never come across a Starbucks card that I didn't like. Seriously. This adorable little "mini-Snowman" key ring card is no exception.

When I saw this today, I had to have it. It's the perfect gift for your office Secret Santa or the mailman or gardener. You can load it with a little or load it with a lot. This one I loaded only with five bucks because I have like a hundred cards, but you never know when you might be out of cash and desperate for a tall latte.

This is my favorite time of year for many reasons. One being that it's usually when the coffee roasters get their limited offerings of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffees.

First up. Benicia Coffee and Tea's limited offering. Retail price is 36.00 per pound. Which is a good price for pure Blue Mountain Coffee.

I brewed up a Chemex-full this morning and was very pleased with the flavor.

Smooth blend, no after-taste and non-acidic.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm writing this post while drinking a cup of Starbucks Anniversary Blend. I suppose I should be drinking Thanksgiving Blend, but I don't have any.

But this post really isn't about coffee, it's about gratitude.

Holidays tend to bring out the best and worst in people. For me, it's filled with memories of those who are no longer around to share the day and those who go out of their way to make sure it's a good day for others. People like my nephew and his wife who are preparing a feast for family and friends.

I'm grateful for good health, a roof over my head when so many people are homeless, a car to drive when so many don't have transportation, a job when so many are unemployed.

I don't feel especially witty today. Actually, my mood could be characterized as bittersweet.

Nonetheless, I'm very blessed and don't want to let this day go by without saying "Thank You."

And, I'm thankful for those of you who take time from your busy and productive days to stop by and endure my ramblings and random thoughts.

Be good to one another.

Foiled Again (But, It's All Good)

When I was contacted by the Community Agroecology Network in Santa Cruz, California , I thought, "oh, great more Fair Trade Coffee."

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge supporter of Fair Trade (TM), however, just because it's Fair Trade, doesn't mean it's good.

The nice woman asked if I would be willing to give their coffee a review and if I preferred a dark roast or light roast coffee. I said, "Dark roast," please. Yawn.

The coffee arrived within a few days. Yawn.

I looked at the package for one whole day before I opened it. Of course, I love coffee, but I've tried many different coffees. And trust me, they are not created equal. And you know me, if I can't say something nice, I don't say anything at all.

Well, a few days later, when I opened the bag, and looked at the beans, I thought, "pretty impressive." The beans were nice and dark and glistened.

Then I ground them in my Baratza grinder. Scooped out enough to make a six cup pot and waited. While my coffee was brewing, I took my shower, and then went in to pour myself a cup. "Nice aroma," I thought.

Then I took my first sip. WOW. Guess who's not yawning now?

If there's anything I like better than a GREAT cup of coffee, it's a great cup of coffee for a great cause.

One Nice Surprise After the Other

Surprise Number One. I had no idea that nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee was a five-star luxury resort by the name of Blackberry Farm. I had never heard of the place until Mr. and Mrs. Big Mike went there on a recent vacation. And because they know that I may never get to Blackberry Farm, they brought me back a pound of coffee. Which, in my book, is the next best thing.

Surprise Number Two. I had never heard of H.C. Valentine Coffee Company until I received the coffee which is specially crafted for Blackerry Farm by Valentine. H.C. Valentine is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

And all this time, I thought Wisconsin was famous for cheese.

Any-hoo, the coffee is smooth, balanced, rich and what one might expect to be served at 5-Star Luxury Resort like Blackberry Farm. If one were to ever get the chance to go there.

For now, I'll drink my coffee and be grateful.

I'm pretty sure I literally shrieked when I received this gift from my niece.

She went to Seattle on a business trip and brought me back a package of PIKE PLACE SPECIAL RESERVE - SEATTLE WASHINGTON EDITION. I had never even seen one of these bags in person.

As you know, I've enjoyed Pike Place Blend for years, but this package is so cool that I don't even want to open it! I think I'm going to put it in my curio cabinet. I mean, come on this is a collectible!

Apparently, you can ONLY purchase this special bag at two Starbucks stores in Seattle. Now, you'll have to figure out which two. And when you do, let me know. I'm such a lucky gal.

Remember, be nice to the kids when they're young because when they grow up and travel around the world, they'll remember you. Especially, when it comes to coffee.

She Drank Peter Asher Black Velvet Blend Coffee*

So many coffees. So little time. I can't believe how many roasters are out there that I don't know about. That can only mean one thing - I must vow to continue my journey in search of locating and tasting every good coffee on the planet. That could take a lifetime. So, that's what I'll do.

When I learned of Peter Asher Coffee and Tea, naturally the first thing I did was check out their website. The signature alone says, "classy." But what does a wonderful website and a great signature have to do with a great cup of coffee? In the case of Peter Asher it's a sign of what's to come.

I've been drinking the "Black Velvet" roast all week and I can't pull myself away from it. I have a couple of other new blends I want to try, but the Black Velvet just keeps calling my name.

It's deep and dark but not the kind of deep and dark that just overpowers the palate. This is smooth as silk. I would go so far as to call it romantic.

I'm A Spicy Apple Head

This is the time of year that I develop a greater appreciation for tea. This morning, instead of starting my day with coffee, I thought, "Why not do something different?" So, I did. Instead of jumping out of bed and racing to the coffee maker, I got up early and meandered over to the stove and turned on my Chantal kettle. I love it because it has that loud whistle that won't let me forget that I'm boiling water. I mean, without my coffee in the morning, who knows what could happen?

But today was different. I made myself a cup of Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice and watched the local news. The news was all bad. But the tea was all good. And I felt relaxed.

Well, enough of that relaxing. Work calls. It's time to go brew up a big pot and get my day going.

I will admit though, I enjoyed the tea.

I Need A Jolt

I feel like I'm in a coffee rut. There have a been a couple of coffees lately that have really caught my palate, but now that the weather has turned cooler which means I'm going to turn up the coffee volume, I'm looking for something that will really blow my skirt up. Figuratively speaking. No one wants to see my skirt blow up these days.

Anyhow, I'm starting to feel like there's nothing that turns me on lately. I mean really turns me on.

So, if you have a coffee that I don't know about, drop me an email. I'd love to hear from you. I'm all mugs.

We made it through Monday - which means, we're 1/5th of the way there.

I Love Surprises

It doesn't take much to make me happy. Case in point. This morning, I'm headed to the white canister to brew up a pot of the week's selection. But before I open the lid, I open the cabinet to decide which mug I'd like to drink from - there's a method to how I select my mug for each day - but that's another blog.

Anyway, luckily for me, I'm wearing my glasses because I spy a Ziplock bag with just about enough coffee for a pot of - drumroll - Blue Marmelade coffee from Haiti! I thought I'd used it all. Then I remembered that I'd tucked some away for a rainy day.

Well,it's not raining but it is cold. And my cup is hot.

Starbucks 2011 Anniversary Blend

If I'm remembered in life for anything other than my love of coffee, it will be my fierce loyalty.

I was looking for a different coffee today. I wanted something special to end my week with a big bang.

Problem is, I couldn't think of any coffee that would send me into orbit that I didn't have to order online or hadn't already tried.

I mean, I could have always picked up something in the grocery store, but where's the fun in that? I mean that's not ending the week in style.

I passed several coffee shops on my way home from work, including the usual suspects, but then I remembered that it's Starbucks Anniversary Blend time and I hadn't brewed any at home this year. So, I turned to my old friend "The Siren."

The 2011 Blend isn't anything different from what Starbucks has offered in past years. And maybe that's what makes it so good. It's tried and true.

So, while I may not be ending the week with anything that's new, at least I know what to expect.

When I bought my Apple logo mug, many years ago, I was already a Mac(TM) convert. That was even before the iPod or iTunes.

So, I thought it only appropriate to dedicate today's post to Steve Jobs.

It's funny how you can be so sad when someone passes that you never even met. I don't know if Steve Jobs drank coffee. But, I've had many a cup while typing on my Mac(TM) and blabbering about how much I love coffee. He changed the way we live and work.

Coffee AM - Prepare to Be Impressed!

When the folks at Coffee AM contacted me and asked if I would be interested in reviewing their coffees, my first thought was, "I've never heard of Coffee AM. It must not be very good."

Well. Lesson learned. There are whole lot of coffee roasters out there and obviously I haven't heard about them all.

Dottie - you're not in Seattle anymore.

Coffee AM is located in Canton, Georgia. They roast their coffee in small batches. Just for you. I guess you could call it "custom made."

To be honest, I refused to try it during the week because my work-week is rough enough and there's nothing that makes me madder than brewing a pot of bad coffee.

So, I waited until the weekend to give it a try. Okay, Coffee A.M. - you got me - I'm HOOKED!

Yesterday, I sampled the "Jamaica Blue Mountain Reserve" which is a blend - not 100 percent Blue Mountain. It is 100 percent delicious!

This morning I brewed their "Kenya AA" coffee. Another winner.

So the moral of the story is - "Keep an open mind, you never know where you next cup is going to show up."

If you didn't know, I'm an avid collector of Starbucks gift cards. I have as many Starbucks cards as I have coffee mugs. Well, maybe not quite.

Anyway, I was getting coffee the other day and spotted the beautiful Fall Edition card with autumn leaves. I picked it up because it was so pretty, but then, I felt it and realized it was in Braille!

Now, I don't read Braille, and thankfully, I can see. But I can imagine how much that means to those who are visually impaired.

No matter what you say about corporate giants, Starbucks really does care. (In my humble opinion)

I've Never Met A Mug I Didn't Like

If the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, the way to mine is through a mug.

A very nice person from the Legal Aid Society sent me a very nice mug. It is a high quality mug with ample room for a hot cup of coffee, hot chocolate, tea or even soup. I have a vast collection of mugs.

Which might make you wonder why this kind gesture meant so much to me. Well, for one, no one has to give you anything. Ever. Two, the Legal Aid Society does wonderful work and three, I can't turn my back on a good mug.

I thought about paying it forward and giving it to one of my friends who doesn't have nearly the assortment of mugs that I do. I even thought (for a fleeting moment) about gathering all the mugs I don't use much anymore and taking them to a nice shelter (which I'm still considering). But, I have separation anxiety.

At any rate, for now, I'm going to enjoy my latest acquisition.

My pantry knows I don't need another mug, but I can't say no to a pretty face.

Aloha! Ka'U Rusty's Hawaiian by Equator Coffees

Thank God for Twitter. I was scrolling through "tweets" the other day and found out that Equator Coffees had just roasted the last small batch of Ka'u Rusty's Hawaiian.

So, I immediately picked up the phone and tried to order a pound. I was told that it was all gone. I said, "It can't be. It was just on twitter two minutes ago that you're roasting the last batch. Please, check with the roaster." The nice lady put me on hold and came back and said "we have a tiny bit left - maybe 12 ounces at most." I said, "Wrap It Up, I'll Take It!"*

What a way to start my Sunday. This coffee is so good and smooth. Medium-boldness.

Equator's profile says "A crisp cup highlighted by juicy citrus and notes of pineapple, raising and flower."

I say, "Mahalo!"

I guess you guys will have to wait for next year. Myself, I'm going to savor every drop.

This has got to be the cutest onesie ever!

Unless you're from Louisiana or Texas (or know someone who is), you probably know nothing about "Coffee Milk." Coffee Milk is what babies cut their "teeth" on before they're able to handle the real stuff. I used to love to hear the babies in Texas say, "I want coffee milk!"

I used to give my daughter coffee (without milk) when she was little to help with her asthma wheeze. See, coffee has medicinal purposes.

Only the folks at Community Coffee could think of this!

Without You, I Am Nothing

As some of you know, I've recently started a new gig. That means getting up earlier, being on time, performing at the highest level. You know the drill.

Anyway, I thought I could do this without taking my morning coffee break. It's not like I don't have a cup of super fuel to start the day, but, normally there's that mid-morning cup that takes me to the after-lunch refill.

Well, this morning, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I said, "Forget the dumb stuff, I'm heading downstairs to Starbucks" I don't even have to technically leave the building to go there. And the law says you get a break. Besides that, my head practically hit the desk!

Okay, I'm addicted to the mean bean. There are worse things you know. At least, I didn't take a Kit-Kat break. Although, those are pretty delicious with coffee.

Coffee Concoction

I have no idea what I'm drinking this morning. However, it tastes very good and is doing the trick in getting me on my feet. Which is saying a lot considering that I feel like I've been knocked down. Oh, I haven't been on a bender. I had no alcohol last night. What I've been on for the last few weeks is an emotional roller coaster.

Hopefully, this will be the week that turns it around and I find my center. Hopefully. I've had so much going on in my head. I have finally accepted that I've got more time behind me than I do in front of me. And, as Richard Pryor used to say, "Whatcha gone do?"

Well, I don't know. Honestly. I don't. I do know that the definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So, what I will try to do is make a conscious effort to do something different every day. I've already made a "first step" in taking myself out of my comfort zone. Now, all I have to do is get comfortable in my zone.

Until then, I may just keep brewing "remnant coffee" from different beans. Who knows? Confusion in my cup might equal order in my head.

I love San Francisco. You never know what treasure you'll find. And when you least expect it, out of nowhere, up pops a simple pleasure to put a smile on your face.

I'm ashamed to say I had no idea that Specialty's Bakery (home of arguably the best brownie on the planet) now has an Intelligentsia Coffee store inside its location on Pine Street.

Imagine my delight when I discovered it during lunch today. I was so excited that I couldn't wait to get off work and rush in before they closed to pick up a bag of Late Harvest, Finca Matalapa, Los Inmortales, El Salvador.

Intelligentsia's website describes it as:

Dense and anchored in character, this Late Harvest selection brings flavors of homemade cherry cola and cranberry. Fudge and Tootsie Roll pair with a tart acidity and marmalade snap. The finish is buttery and long.

I'll be the judge. Morning can't come fast enough!

CBS Sunday Morning

You know I love coffee. I also love news. Newspapers, television news, internet news. More news. More better.

But this CBS mug has special meaning. My friend is moving to New York in a couple of weeks and she was having a yard sale. I went to the sale to say goodbye to her and her husband and what should I spy but a CBS logo mug. I said, "You can't sell this! This is a collectible. I mean it's part of your past!"

She and I met many years ago when we were both working for the local CBS-affiliate. I worked in - what else? News. She worked in programming. Anyway, after about three minutes of my convincing her that parting with the mug would be sinful, she handed it to me and said, "Here."

So, every time I drink from this cup, I'll think of her and all the memories we shared at that special time in our lives when we were young and excited and working in an industry we both loved and when news was really newsworthy.

Getting Away For the Weekend In the Comfort of Your Own Home

Nothing like a weekend getaway. But if you can't really "get away," you can always escape. This morning, I'm enjoying hotel coffee in my very own living room. Hotel Blend is the new roast from Community Coffee. It's part of their "Special Blends" collection.

The thing I like about Community Coffee is that it's not trying to be something that's it not. It's so unpretentious. And good. Hotel Blend is a medium roast coffee that has just enough kick but is smooth enough not to overwhelm my weekend palate. Because it's Saturday and I don't want to jump start my day. I just want to ease into it.

TGIF. To the 2nd Power! Wow. What a week. So many changes. So little time. I wish I could say that the week flew by, but it didn't.

I can say that I couldn't have made it through without you though. Every morning, as I sat at my computer and read emails which demanded to know "What is your answer?," I sipped you while you were steaming hot and even when you got lukewarm, you were still a comfort to me.

Mocha Java, Blue Mountain, New Orleans Blend and French Roast. From every corner of the world, you pushed me along. Finally, I was able to see clearly. But not without you to lift the daily fog.

I can't wait until tomorrow when we have quality time together. No stress (hopefully) and no rushing.

Dear Coffee - I (heart) you and thank you for your friendship.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Dude, Where's My Coffee?

This is the mother of all Mondays. Mondays are always rough, right? Yes, they are. But today my cup has one extra lump of stress.

I have a decision to make and I have to make it fast. Stick with what I know or risk it all for what's behind Door Number Three.

Sometimes there is no easy way out. Life used to be so simple. What happened? Oh, yeah, that's right. I grew up.

Anyway, whatever I decide, I figure that desperate times call for desperate measures.

So, I went into the cabinet, reached way back and pulled out my private stash. Starbucks Jamaica Blue Mountain. In the Chemex. That's right. I pulled out the big guns. Because days like today don't just get better on their own. Sometimes you have to take the bull by the horns.

You know that I love coffee. And you probably know that I love donuts. Now a company that offers both is my kinda corporation. A lot of people have been waiting on this IPO for months. I'm not fortunate enough to live near a Dunkin' Donuts (or maybe it's fortunate in my case), but, at any rate, this is going to heat up Wall Street.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters Presents "Guatemala Santa Clara"

I have never had a bad cup of coffee from Stumptown Roasters. Founded by Duane Sorenson, and based in Portland, there has been a lot of talk lately amongst coffee purists about the fact that Stumptown has gone "corporate." Stumptown continues to deliver the same great beans hence amazing cup of coffee as it has in the past.

This recent limited offering of Guatemala Santa Clara is one of the best Guatemalan coffees I've enjoyed. It reminds me of another of my very favorite Guatemalan coffees which is only offered once a year from another "corporate" coffee company in the Northwest (think Seattle - starts with "S").

Any-whoo, I can't think of a better way to start a Wednesday morning. It is mild and flavorful with chocolate undertones.

And it's one of their "Direct Trade" coffees. Nothing like a friendly handshake to seal the cup.

Leslie Wolford is a 20 year partner with Starbucks in Seattle.

Her title is Senior Green Coffee Specialist. Which means she knows a lot about selecting the best beans. Leslie is responsible for ensuring a great cup of coffee happening in your cup.

Leslie moved to Seattle in 1991 from the Midwest. She always liked coffee but didn’t really discover coffee until she arrrived in Seattle. She had initially planned to take six months off and just learn about Seattle. Instead, she decided to apply for a job at Starbucks to hopefully get a better understanding of the culture and everything that’s lovely about Seattle. She was attracted to Starbucks from the "get-go." She loved the vibe in the store, the comfort and the interaction.

Leslie began her career with Starbucks as a barista. She stayed in retail for about 3/12 years. Then she moved on to "roaster," a job she would enjoy for another five or so years. Then it was on to the "coffee planning department" for a number of years. Finally, she got the opportunity join Starbucks Coffee Department which is where she rests her mug today.

When I spoke with Leslie last week, she informed me that “Brewing is a very individual thing." That morning she was tasting Jamaica Blue Mountain (Starbucks Reserve TM) through the Clover Brewer. Clover(TM) brews a really clean cup of coffee.

Starbucks has long-term relationships with all of their suppliers so they’re only buying and sourcing the best coffees out there. They're looking at the supply chain; analyzing it for flavor and quality. Then they move towards buying the coffee.

They don't just say "it's good." They taste it again. And again. Setting up a "roast profile."

Morning Thunder Tea by Celestial Seasonings

I have yet to meet a Celestial Seasonings tea I didn't like. Doesn't mean there aren't any. I just haven't tried them.

Anyway, since it's not even 10 a.m. and I've already had two cups of strong coffee, I thought this would be a good time to find out what my daughter has been raving about. Black tea + mate = delicious flavor.

I can't even describe this one. It tastes like - tea. Good tea.

You'll have to trust me on this one and check it out for yourself.

If you're like me, there are some days where you have to take it down a notch from the coffee. I think this Morning Thunder is a happy medium.

Rep Your Coffee With The Right Tee

A couple of Saturdays ago, I walked into my favorite local artisan coffee shop, "Catahoula Coffee" oblivious to the fact that I was wearing a tee-shirt from one of the big coffee giants. Cut me some slack. It was early. I hadn't had my first cup. I was a little "out of it."

Anyway, Timber, the owner/barista/roastmeister didn't throw me out. He simply asked, "What are you doing???" That's when I realized, I was about to be mobbed. Being the kind soul that he is, and not wanting to see a lady ripped to shreds by a bunch of angry Catahouligans, he ran to the back of the store, handed me a tee-shirt and said, "Quick, put this on!"

I'm sorry for disrespecting the good folks at Catahoula, but I sure am happy with my new Catahoula tee which bears the picture of none other than my favorite coffee-dog, "Lola," who happens to have her own blend here.

What Is A Pop Culture Expert And What Kind of Coffee Does She Drink?

I was watching a segment on "The Today Show" last week and a woman was being interviewed about some particular news event. I can't even remember what the story was about. But I can't get her title out of my head, "Pop Culture Expert."

It made me wonder if I have what it takes to be a pop culture expert. Is it something that is now being offered as a major in colleges? A Bachelor of Science in Popular Culture? I wonder if there is such a thing? Probably.

Anyway, I would imagine that it requires a lot of reading of things like "Us Weekly" and "In Touch," and even "The National Enquirer." How many followers do you need on "twitter?" And of course, you'd have to be on "LinkedIn," and I would imagine you'd have thousands of Facebook "friends."

And you probably have to wear like really high heels and Minx nails and get facial peels and hang out in posh salons and the hippest bars and know all the latest restaurants. And not just the restaurants, but the chefs of each restaurant, and of course, you'd have to at least know a few "A" list celebrities personally. Or, at the very least, quite a few "B" list celebrities.

This young woman was very pretty. She had a great figure, was well-dressed and naturally well-spoken.

However, there was one thing I remember thinking throughout the time I watched her being interviewed and that is - what kind of coffee does a Pop Culture Expert drink?

This morning I woke up and dragged myself into the kitchen to find the nightmare of nightmares. The coffee canister was empty! Was this an evil trick someone was playing on me? I NEVER run out of coffee. Do I? Well, it seems today, I had. There were no samples in sight, nothing new to try and all of my favorites had been ground and brewed. Nada. Zip.

Yuban to the rescue! I looked in the pantry and on the top shelf was an unopened can of Yuban. I mean, every cup can't be a micro-roast, right? I got right off my high horse and made a pot of Yuban. And guess what? It's darn good coffee.

So, the next time you're pondering what your new coffee should be - there's a good chance, it might be right under your nose.

A Friend In Coffee Is a A Friend Indeed

I emailed my old friend, Barbara, a few weeks ago. She's one of those people that you meet along the way and you never want them to leave your life.

She's got a beautiful face and a warm smile and she's a great listener. We worked together over 10 years ago. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of work and life, we don't take time to nurture relationships that are important to us. We just tend to get so busy and don't pick up the phone or God forbid we should drop a line or two in the mail. I'm talking USPS mail.

I remember one year for my birthday she me brought a jar of the best homemade red sauce in the world. I think she also put a dish towel and a wooden spoon in the goodie bag. I forget. The sauce will stay with me forever. Which is why I wanted her to know how often I think of her and how much she means to me.

She also extended an open invitation to her home whenever I happened to be in her area. She said, "Stop by when you are in the area. I always have good coffee."

Now, that's what I call a good friend.

Can We Talk?

Joan Rivers used to crack me up. She'd walk onto the stage of the old "Tonight Show" and say, "Can We Talk?"

Well, can we talk about Starbucks? I am not one of those people who thinks that Starbucks is the corporate devil. I understand and appreciate change. I know that little coffeehouses sometimes go under because they can't compete. On the other hand, I see a lot of wonderful things that Starbucks is doing in the community. And what about those "Grounds for Gardens?"

But, since it's Saturday morning and I can really appreciate taking my time while sipping my coffee and talking to you, I just want to say - Starbucks - what is up with this "15 second rule" in your financial district coffee bars? I know we're all in a hurry Monday through Friday, but really, really? Do you have to stack people on top of each other? Talk about being in another person's space. Before I can spit out my order as quickly as I can (I feel like a rapper), you're calling the next customer, "NEXT!" I mean, God forbid I should not have a Starbucks card and want to pay in old-fashioned cash. The looks I get while fumbling through my purse (okay, I admit it, my purse is a bit of a disaster) could kill!

I know you're trying to be efficient and move the lines quickly, but for crying out loud, can a girl just catch her breath?

Breathe. Stretch. Let It Go.

I feel so much better now that I've gotten that off my chest!

A Caribou Is Calling My Name - Honduras Blend By Caribou Coffee

Sometimes I just want to ease into the day. On those mornings, I prefer a milder blend like Caribou's Honduras Blend. It's one of their Roastmaster's Reserve coffees which means you can only get it a few times a year. I think that's because the people at Caribou don't want to spoil you.

Revolution (TM) White Pear Tea

This is a perfect choice for after-dinner. I had a cup earlier today and found the white tea to be so soothing,that instead of my after dinner cup of coffee, I opted for a pear instead. Revolution White Pear Tea.

The flavor of this tea is so subtle. I was prepared to be knocked over by the fruit, but it's very "unimposing." I steep mine for about three minutes in the cup.

This box comes in these "flow-through infusers" which I think of as fancy little mesh stockings. Very sophisticated.

I haven't been able to find this particular flavor in stores, but I know that Safeway does offer a good selection of Revolution Teas.

Retro Coffee and Cake

My book club met the other night to discuss our latest read; Elizabeth Berg's "The Last Time I Saw You." The story centered around the character, Dorothy (what a "coinki-dink") who was preparing for her 40th and last class reunion.

I won't give anything away, but there's a part of the book which talks about Orange Cake. Well, that got me to thinking about the old Orange Supreme Cake Mix from Duncan Hines. Yes, I said that seven letter bad word "cake mix." Meaning, not from scratch. Don't tell Martha Stewart, please.

Anyway, I thought wouldn't it be fun to make an orange cake for our meeting? And since we're having retro cake, why not go all the way back and have instant coffee instead of gourmet? Guess what? Everyone loved it. It was a big hit!

Maxwell House Instant Coffee has come a long way. I get the feeling my mother is smiling down on me. Her motto was, "Why bother with scratch when there's cake mix?"

Tully's House Blend

There once was a coffee roaster in San Francisco by the name of Spinelli. Spinelli Coffee had shops throughout the city and it was known for being one of the best artisan roasters in the Bay Area. Not only did they have good coffee, their shops had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Spinelli didn't have a big chain feel. It felt like home. Then in the '90s, Spinelli was purchased by a coffee roaster out of Seattle by the name of Tully's. People were wary of this "Tully's Coffee." They moaned and groaned and feared they would never be able to enjoy great coffee in a great atmosphere again.

But then a funny thing happened. Tully's took over Spinelli and it was all good. Not only did Tully's offer the same great coffee that people loved, the atmosphere stayed pretty much the same. Tully's doesn't rush you out the door like some "other big name coffee houses" and their baristas are like old friends. I love to go to the Tully's in Embarcadero Two and sip and knit with colleagues.

Mug Madness

Now that March Madness is over - let the "mug madness" begin. Recently, I wrote a guest post on another blog about my mug collection. I started thinking about how much I love mugs. I have been on a "mug diet" for a while since I had been cautioned not to bring another mug into the house. :)

Some people always want to steal your joy. However, I shall not be contained. I decided that I would not deprive myself of the occasional "mug treat." So, I ordered this oversized mug from Caribou Coffee. It's perfect for lattes, a large cup of tea or even soup. Plus, it's got this cute slogan inside which reads "Love What You Brew, Brew What You Love." Inspiration with my morning coffee.

Coffee and a Woman of a Certain Age

I'll admit it. I'm biased. I tend to favor coffee drinkers. Tea drinkers are cool too. But, what do you think of a person who drinks neither coffee or tea? Honestly, I think they're a little odd.

I met a woman who seemed perfectly nice on the surface. She really did. We were about the same age and initially it appeared that we might have a connection. Then I suggest we meet for a cup of coffee. She said, "I don't drink coffee." I said, "Well, you can have tea." She replied, "I don't drink tea either." I said, 'Well, what do you drink?" She said, "Nothing." Game over.

Really, I mean, really? A woman of a certain age who drinks nothing? And I'm not talking about alcoholic beverages. First thing I wonder is "How in the heck do you wake up?" Second thing, I think is, "You're up to something and I don't trust you."

Even if she were a "health nut" which judging from her appearance, she didn't seem to be, wouldn't she have a cup of herbal tea at night to relax?

Bottom line - if you don't drink anything, then you're up to something. Do you think she's an alien?

Ebony and Ivory Living Together In Perfect Harmony In My Cup

Good news. Big Mike is on the road again. And you know what that means. More coffee, more coffee, more coffee!

So, Big Mike blazed through Charlotte, North Carolina for one day where while perusing the "NODA" District, he lands at "Smelly Cat Coffeehouse." I know. Strange name.

Anyhow, he picks up a bag of Sumatra/French Roast Blend Coffee. First of all, it smells amazing. I'm talking in the bag, before you even grind the beans and brew them. I make a pot this morning. Perfect Harmony is all I can think. It's bold, but it's not bold. It's mild, but it's not mild. It's just GREAT coffee.

You figure that anybody who has the nerve to name their coffee "Smelly Cat" must be pretty confident in their beans. And with good reason.

Will A Misto "Make-A-Me" Fancy?

As I stood at the counter at Starbucks waiting to place my order, a young woman with perfectly coiffed hair, manicured nails, designer shoes and purse ordered a "Misto."

Okay, to be perfectly honest I didn't even know what she was talking about. I've said many times that I'm not a coffee expert. I'm just a "coffee lover." I tend to drink coffee with a packet of raw sugar and a splash of low-fat milk (or Coffee-Mate - yes Coffee-Mate) or cream from time to time.

I started thinking how uninteresting I must appear to the baristas. Every day, same thing, tall bold. BORING.

Thanks to Google, I found out:

Misto = A drink consisting of half coffee, half steamed milk and a bit of foam. It can be made decaf, nonfat, etc. "Misto" is the Starbucks name, cafe au lait is a more generic term.

Tomorrow morning it's a Misto for me because I want to be "fancy" too. :)

Goes GREAT with Coffee - Biscoff Cookies!

You know those little crunchy, buttery, yummy cookies they serve on airplanes? Guess what - you don't have to buy a plane ticket to enjoy them. I found them at Cost Plus World Market!

I had them with my coffee this morning. They're so good. And they make me feel so "international." They're made in Beligum but distributed right here in San Francisco! How cool is that? They even have a Biscoff Coffee Corner at Pier 39. I haven't been there but I plan to add it to my list of places to visit.

I could just snack on these little things all day. Oooh, I think I'll have some tonight after dinner. And maybe I'll dunk them in my coffee. Doesn't that sound good?

A Little Cream In My Coffee

The other day in Starbucks as I was putting my one packet of raw sugar and low fat milk in my coffee, a little bell went off in my head. I thought, "Who am I kidding?" I never enjoy real cream in my coffee because I don't want the extra calories. And I know that I don't need the cholesterol. But, considering I'm really never on a diet, although I do try to sometimes watch what I eat, and I'll never wear a bikini again, why not enjoy a little cream in my coffee?

So, yesterday while grocery shopping, after I grabbed the 2 percent milk, I also dropped a tiny little carton of half and half into my basket. I mean a little drop of cream never killed anybody. Right?

And besides, it's Sunday. I owe it to myself.

Put some real cream in your coffee. Life is short and we'll never get out of it alive.

Tribute Blend by Starbucks

Starbucks found a great offering to celebrate 40 years in business. The "Tribute Blend" is a delicious blend of three coffees. Smooth and mild with calming scents and hint of nuttiness.

I had a cup this morning and I can't stop thinking about it. In fact, it's making me "nutty." That's the thing about these "limited offerings" - you fall in love with them and then they're gone.

Better get it while it's hot. :)

The Zojirushi CD-LCC30 Micom 3.0 Liter Electric Dispensing Pot is like a tea kettle on steroids. My daughter told me about one of the girls in her dorm who owns this particular model and how well it works.

So, the folks at Zojirushi sent me one to check out for myself. The machines heats up quickly, is extremely convenient, doesn't take up too much counter space (I have a small kitchen) and has wonderful safety features.

I Don't Want Peets and Starbucks to Merge

Unless you've had your head under a coffee cup for the past week, you've heard about the rumors of a merger between Starbucks and Peets.

I think it's a bad idea for them to merge. This is not a marriage made in coffee heaven. I like them both but if I had to choose one it would be Starbucks. Not because Peets is not good coffee but it's consistently strong and I like the fact that I have a choice of light or dark roast at Starbucks. Plus, the food offerings at Starbucks are much better. Especially the new cake pops.

Anyway, Peets + Starbucks would be like Walmart and Target burying the hatchet and merging. It's just not right.

"Crescent City Blend" by Community Coffee

The Crescent City Connection, abbreviated as CCC, (formerly the Greater New Orleans Bridge) refers to twin cantilever bridges that carry U.S. Route 90 Business over the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Louisiana. They are tied as the fifth-longest cantilever bridges in the world.*

When Community Coffee sent me this coffee to review, I wasn't so sure I would like it. I tend to have my favorites from CC (like their Founder's Blend) and sometimes I'm a little hard to convince. But, I was pleasantly surprised. The bag describes it as a "medium-dark" roast. The color of the beans suggest a milder coffee than I've come to expect from CC. But, this was not the case. I would describe it as a "dark-medium" roast. It's definitely got some "kick" to it. In fact, by the time I'd gotten halfway through my cup, the flavor seemed to come back and bite me again!

Definitely an "eye-opener." This would be my recommendation for a morning brew. It will jump start you and I have a feeling I may be going for a while. Which is a good thing since today is going to be busy!

New Chocolate Teas from Republic of Tea

Republic of Tea sent me these two varieties to sample. Red Velvet Cupcake and Strawberry Chocolate.

To be honest, I was sort of afraid to try them because I wasn't sure that I would like the flavor combination. But the chocolate is not at all overbearing and neither is the Strawberry or the Red Velvet. It's a very subtle flavor and doesn't hit you over the head. My colleagues enjoyed it too.

They are both Rooibos or red teas. Strawberry Chocolate is great for during the day. Red Velvet would be my nighttime choice as it is herbal.

Isn't She Lovely?

I picked up the new "Special Edition" Starbucks card this morning. It is so cool. Just in time for St. Patrick's Day. And speaking of Starbucks, have you tried the new "Tribute" blend? If so, what do you think of it? I've had a cup every day this week. Pretty good.

And while you know I'm a fan of the little guy, sometimes "big coffee" can do some neat things. Starbucks does some really cool stuff. And they also have some super baristas. Shout out to Max Cohen at the Solano Avenue Store in Berkeley. Max donated two "carry-out boxes" of freshly brewed "Pike's Place" to our neighborhood watch meeting last night. And he even helped me take the coffee to my car. You have to admit, that's pretty awesome.

And they also have these new "petite-treats" including "cake pops" like the ones Bakerella makes. There were some mini salted caramel brownies and red velvet whoopie pies. I haven't tried any of them yet but I plan to try them all this weekend. You know, a little random sampling :)

Anyway, this isn't meant to be an endorsement for Starbucks, but sometimes you have to just give credit where credit is due.

Fat Tuesday

I'm celebrating all by myself. That's right. Alone. At least this morning. That's because my sister (she's so cool) dropped off a King Cake at my house last night. I'm getting mine first before I share. Why? Because it's Fat Tuesday.

So eat, drink and be merry. Because tomorrow Lent begins.

Now, all I need is a hot cup of Community Coffee and I'm good to go!
